Mercury service: maintenance schedule, steps and parts for your engine
We open Mercury's maintenance schedule model by model for Mercury outboards and MerCruiser sterndrives. Every procedure page states separately who does each step, what is done, why it is needed and how; the parts list comes with live price and stock, oil and gearcase capacities are model-specific, and Mercury's official videos and the matching owner's manual section sit on the same page. The source document and page number are printed at the bottom of every page.
37 Mercury and MerCruiser models with an approved maintenance plan
The list is grouped by family; each card shows how many procedure pages the model has. Pages are prepared per model and serial range. If you are not sure which model you have, the serial number box above looks it up in the Mercury registry.
Model and procedure pages are in English; the step narratives on them come from the workshop records and are in Turkish for now. Schedules, parts lists, prices and capacities read the same in any language.
Model not in the list: its maintenance plan has not yet been written and approved by the Merkür team, or it has no showcase entry. Put the model and serial number in your service request; the page is added here once the plan is ready.
Maintenance schedule
The six procedure types in Mercury's maintenance schedule
The interval rule is the same on every model: engine hours or calendar, whichever comes first. Engines run in salt or brackish water get their anodes, spark plugs and lubrication points checked more often. The cards are the general frame; steps and parts lists vary by model and are written on the model page.
20-hour first service
first 20 engine hours · on 35 models
authorized dealer
What is done: As soon as break-in ends the gearcase lube is changed and the engine oil and filter renewed per model; bolt torques, cable and hose connections and the propeller nut are checked.
Why: New gears shed the most metal in the first hours; a gearcase that keeps running on that lube later turns noisy and leaks at the seals. This service is also the first line of the warranty record.
100 hours or once a year, whichever first · on 37 models
mostly authorized dealer
What is done: Engine oil and filter, fuel filter, gearcase lube, anodes, spark plug check, propeller shaft greasing, thermostat and cooling water outlet check.
Why: By 100 hours the oil has turned acidic with combustion by-products and attacks the bearings; in salt water an anode dissolves in a season and hands its job to the aluminum housing. Done before the season, problems are caught before you leave the dock.
What is done: On top of the 100-hour items the water pump impeller and spark plugs are replaced; belts, fuel lines and harness connections are inspected per model.
Why: Impeller rubber hardens over three seasons and loses vanes; a lost vane is invisible at first but cooling flow drops and the engine runs hot. These items age by time, not hours.
end of season, before the first frost · on 35 models
authorized dealer
What is done: Freshwater flush, fuel stabilizer, fogging oil in the cylinders, water check in the gearcase lube, fuel filter and anode renewal, battery removed and kept on charge.
Why: Water left in the block or gearcase expands when it freezes and cracks the casting; frost damage is outside warranty. Ethanol fuel separates within months and clogs the injectors. Winterization prevents both before next season starts.
What is done: Oil level, fuel line and priming, lanyard stop switch, damage on propeller and gearcase, play in trim and steering; once running, the cooling water tell-tale stream.
Why: Most breakdowns at sea come from things visible in five minutes ashore, like a loose connection or a damaged propeller. Without the tell-tale stream the engine overheats within minutes.
What is done: After salt or brackish water: flush the engine with fresh water, rinse the exterior, let the gearcase drain in the upright position, close the fuel valve.
Why: Salt left in the cooling passages crystallizes as it dries and narrows the thermostat and water passages. On an engine that is not flushed regularly the 300-hour service bill grows.
Steps. Each step under six headings: who does it, what is done, why it is needed, how it is done, what to watch for, what is required. Dealer-only steps carry a badge; you tick steps off as you go.
Parts list.Mercury part number, live price (US$ list, VAT excluded; ₺ equivalent at the Turkish central bank rate) and stock status. "If needed" items stay outside the total; the list goes to the cart in one tap.
Capacities.Engine oil and gearcase lube quantity, the specification Mercury requires, the package part number, with the source page.
Exploded drawings. The part a step touches is marked on the Mercury catalog drawing; clicking the mark opens the catalog line and its price.
Videos.Mercury Marine's and Quicksilver's official walkthroughs sit next to the step; Merkür's own Turkish recordings take precedence as they are produced.
Owner's manual and source. The relevant manual section opens as a separate PDF; the source document and page number are printed at the bottom of every page. Where a step's narrative is not yet approved, no technician note is published and an "explanation in preparation" line appears instead.

boat owner
What you can do yourself
Pre- and post-use checks, freshwater flushing, anode and propeller checks, draining water from the fuel filter bowl, cleaning battery terminals. Engine oil, filter and gearcase lube changes are also possible; the step pages give the torque value and capacity. During the warranty period these services must be recorded at an authorized dealer.
authorized dealer
Jobs that go to the dealer, and why
Warranty record. Mercury's warranty requires maintenance at the manual's intervals, on record. Service done at the Kartal workshop is entered into the Mercury system against the engine's serial number; unrecorded service does not appear in the warranty file.
Special tools and software. Fault codes and engine hours are read with CDS G3 diagnostic software; supercharger, injection and valve adjustments need dealer tooling. These steps carry the "authorized dealer" badge on the pages.
The right part. The same model uses different parts across serial ranges; the dealer picks the part from the catalog by serial number and converts a superseded number to its replacement.
Service history. Every service is recorded with its work order and parts list; on resale it is handed to the buyer as documentation, and at the next service it is known what was done.
FAQ
About Mercury service and maintenance
How often does a Mercury outboard need servicing?
Mercury's schedule has three tiers: a first service at 20 hours, periodic maintenance every 100 hours or once a year, and replacement of wear parts every 300 hours or every three years. Whichever comes first, hours or calendar, sets the date. Engines run in salt or brackish water get their anodes, spark plugs and lubrication points checked more often. The full list for your model is on its model page.
What happens to the warranty if I skip the 20-hour service?
Mercury's warranty terms require maintenance at the manual's intervals, on record; the 20-hour service is the first line of that record. A failure caused by skipped maintenance can be rejected. The warranty document supplied with your engine is the binding text; service done at the Kartal workshop is entered into the Mercury system by serial number.
Which part of the maintenance can I do myself?
Pre- and post-use checks, freshwater flushing, anode and propeller checks and draining water from the fuel filter bowl are the owner's jobs; the pages mark these steps with a 'boat owner' badge. Engine oil, filter and gearcase lube changes are also possible, but during the warranty period the service must be recorded at an authorized dealer. Steps that need torque values, diagnostic software or special tools carry the 'authorized dealer' badge.
Which oil does my engine need, and how much?
Every model page has a capacity table: engine oil and gearcase lube quantity, the specification Mercury requires and the Mercury part number of the package. Values come from the Mercury owner's manual and are printed with the page number; the Merkür service team verifies them.
What are the prices in the parts list, and can I buy directly?
Prices are Mercury US$ list prices, VAT excluded; the ₺ equivalent is calculated at the day's Turkish central bank rate. The site does not sell directly: you add items to the cart and send a quote request; our team confirms price, stock and delivery by SMS. Labor hours are on the plan page; the amount is given in the maintenance quote.
Where do I read the serial number?
On an outboard the serial number is on the plate on the transom bracket; on a MerCruiser it is on labels on the engine block and the drive. The letter O is written as zero. Typed into the box on this page, it finds the model, model code and the parts catalog by serial range in the Mercury registry.
When should winterization be done?
After the engine's last use of the season, before the first frost. Winterization adds stabilizer to the fuel, fogs the cylinders with protective oil, flushes and drains the cooling system with fresh water, and checks the gearcase lube for water. Leaving water and old fuel inside the engine over winter means a cracked block and clogged injectors.
Are MerCruiser sterndrive engines covered too?
Yes. Approved plans for the MerCruiser 4.5L and 6.2L engines, the Bravo Three drive and the transom assembly are in the list. Engine, drive and transom are separate service models; each page states in its title which scope its plan covers.

A separate page for service technicians and engineers
These pages speak to the boat owner in who-what-why language. The full technical form of the same information lives on a separate page in table layout: step order and duration, sub-steps, torque and capacity values, tool and consumable list, catalog drawing position numbers, labor hours, source document and page. The Technical page link at the top right of every model and procedure page opens that page's technical form; it is printable.
